- Tips for Petitioning Your University for Credit
"Petitioning" is the act of officially requesting of your university to award academic credit for course work undertaken in other universities. Almost all students who study abroad have to petition their home university upon return from a semester or year abroad.
As mentioned, Oranim and Tel Aviv University encourage participants to coordinate the transfer of Tel Aviv University credits in advance of your departure. In order to assist in this endeavor and in petitioning your university upon your return, we have compiled a few tips that you may want to utilize.
- Many Faces of Israel is an academic field school course. Just like participation in archaeological digs is fully accredited, so too is this field course. Many Faces of Israel provides students an opportunity to use the entire country as the classroom and interact with Israelis from diverse backgrounds. This experiential, didactic approach provides insight and knowledge that traditional classroom-bound courses rarely achieve.
- "Taglit-Birthright Israel" need not be emphasized in discussions with your university. In fact, within the university milieu, you may want to think of the free Taglit-Birthright Israel trip as a fellowship or scholarship that you received to come to Israel and participate in this course.
- Speak in terms of academic course hours, not course days. Universities award course credit based on the number of academic hours that a course demands. Although Many Faces of Israel will take place over 10 short days, it covers over 45 academic hours - the norm for university classes over the course of a semester! Don't let the 10-day element of the trip detract from the significant amount of academic hours that you will be undertaking.
- Educational Impact. Remember that you will be learning more on this trip than you probably would all-year long in a similar course. You will experience first-hand the land, peoples and cultures that make Israel the amazing country it is. This is NOT THEORY, it's the REAL THING!
